With the goal of collecting and presenting an archive of cycling related content, we hope to provide a valuable online resource for cycling enthusiasts throughout the region.

Statewide

The Official Bicycling in Virginia Map – Bicycling in Virginia focuses on routes and information of most interest to cyclists. The map includes setting, terrain, elevation and surface conditions. Contains:

  • The commonwealth’s 838 miles of United States Bicycle Routes 1 and 76
  • The Virginia Capital Trail, connecting the colonial capital of Williamsburg with the modern capital of Richmond
  • Numerous locations for off-road mountain bike rides
  • A range of facilities suitable for beginners and families with young children.

National

The Adventure Cycling Association is a great resource for all things related to our national bike routes. They provide details and information on several of these routes that travel through the state of Virginia. You can view the entire Adventure Cycling Route Network here. Routes passing through Virginia:

Mountain Bike

 Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club  – The Charlottesville Area Mountain Bike Club provides descriptions and links for a vaiety of trails in the area. Visit the CAMB website for a full list of both local and regional mountain bike trails.

A google maps based route tool. CycleRoute.org will show route distance, feet ascended/descended and maximum/minimum elevation. There is also a great elevation chart with each route that highlights steep climbs. Display can be adjusted to highlight various grades.

Another google maps based route tool. VeloRoutes.org has a searchable archive of routes built by other users. Searching “Charlottesville” will provide a catalog of existing routes. Users can also build and map their own custom route. Total distance, elevation gain and maximum/minimum elevation are provided for all routes. Travel time at 5 different speeds is also given.

Many peole are unaware that Google Maps provides a choice of transportation modes. At the top of the directions list you will see a car, a bus and a pedestrian. Mousing to the right of the pedestrian will show the option for cycling! With cycling as the mode of transportation, you are given an estimated travel time, route distance, feet ascended/descended and an option for showing bike paths.
