Meet our Intern: Jamie Shelton

Jamie is a rising second-year  Accelerated Master of Public Policy candidate at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. She completed her undergraduate studies in Politics and Public Policy in 2024 at UVA.

Q: How did you decide on your major?

A: The early days of my undergrad programs were spent exploring the different policy sectors, as I had trouble defining which area felt most rewarding. I grew up in a small, rural town without access to affordable housing, public transportation, or reliable internet, which made me acutely aware of the disparities that will set generations behind. At UVA, I sought to find an area that resonated with these experiences, but I struggled to balance my idea of success with a sense of fulfillment. It was not until I began to work on the local level, directly with the communities impacted, that I felt a renewed passion.  I love developing a diverse knowledge base that allows me to make connections across multiple issues, and understanding how they are all intertwined.

Q: What about working for the TJPDC interested you?

A: I was drawn to the TJPDC because it allowed me to explore and understand the different facets of planning in rural and urban development. I am relatively new to environmental planning, but it makes me happy that I will learn something new every day.

Q: What is a fun fact or hobby you’d like to share?

A: In my free time, you can find me social dancing in the area! During my time at UVA, I was heavily involved in a Salsa organization where I performed in shows, so I have developed a love for Latin dance. If anyone is interested in a new hobby, reach out, and I am happy to make recommendations for events in the Charlottesville area (also to teach a salsa or bachata)!
