TJPDC staff annually administer the recycling and solid waste inventory in the Thoms Jefferson Solid Waste District (TJSWD) region, composed of Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna and Greene, to track progress toward meeting the state’s required recycling rate. These annual reports are submitted to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, which evaluates and approves the annual rate. DEQ approved a recycling rate of 39% for the TJSWD region for 2021.
Under Virginia Solid Waste Regulations localities and regions are required to maintain a minimum recycling rate of 25% (for areas with a population over 100,000).
