Each year, the Weldon Cooper Center develops and releases official population estimates for Virginia localities, metropolitan and micropolitan areas, and planning district regions to show population counts between decennial censuses. These estimates provide the best approximation of the population count on July 1 of the prior year. State and local governments use this data for funding allocations, planning, and budgeting purposes.
The July 1, 2025, population estimate for the TJPDC region was 274,339, which is 15,2191 residents, or 5.9% higher than the 2020 Census estimate. This percentage increase is the fifth highest among the 21 PDCs.
In the TJPDC region since the 2020 census, Louisa County has added 4,822 residents, and its 12.8% growth rate is the fourth highest in the state. Greene has grown 1,551 residents, or 7.5%. Albemarle and Fluvanna counties had growth rates between 5.5% and 6%, while estimated population in Nelson County decreased -0.7% from the 2020 Census numbers. The City of Charlottesville grew an estimated 0.8%.

The Weldon Cooper Center notes that localities with relatively large college populations often were undercounted in the 2020 Census. To correct this, the Center has benchmarked population estimates for localities with at least 20% college population (including Charlottesville).
