Each year, the Weldon Cooper Center develops and releases official population estimates for Virginia localities, metropolitan and micropolitan areas, and planning district regions to show population counts between decennial censuses. These estimates provide the best approximation of the population count on July 1 of the prior year. State and local governments use this data for funding allocations, planning, and budgeting purposes.
The July 1, 2024, population estimate for the TJPDC region was 275,848, which is 12,231 residents, or 4.6% higher than the 2020 Census estimate. This percentage increase is the sixth highest among the 21 PDCs.
In the TJPDC region since the 2020 census, Louisa County has added 3,832 residents, and its 10.2% growth rate is the third highest in the state. Greene has grown 1,165 residents, or 5.7%. Albemarle and Fluvanna counties had growth rates between 4% and 5%, while estimated populations in Charlottesville and Nelson County grew 1.4% and 0.1%, respectively, from the 2020 Census numbers.
Locality | April 1, 2020 Census | July 1, 2024 Estimate | Percent change |
|---|---|---|---|
City of Charlottesville | 51,050 | 51,743 | 1.4% |
Albemarle County | 112,395 | 117,790 | 4.8% |
Fluvanna County | 27,249 | 28,382 | 4.2% |
Greene County | 20,552 | 21,717 | 5.7% |
Louisa County | 37,596 | 41,428 | 10.2% |
Nelson County | 14,775 | 14,788 | 0.1% |
The Weldon Cooper Center notes that localities with relatively large college populations often were undercounted in the 2020 Census. To correct this, the Center has benchmarked population estimates for localities with at least 20% college population (including Charlottesville).
