During the 2022 General Assembly session, Delegate Sally Hudson introduced HJR 339 commending the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) on the occasion of its 50th anniversary this year. TJPDC was established in 1972, on the heels of Virginia’s adoption of the Virginia Area Development Act (VADA), which was approved and signed into law in 1968. The TJPDC is the administrator for a 2022 Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI) grant that will facilitate rural broadband expansion across a 13-county area, including the five counties that are part of the TJPDC region. The $79 million grant from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), along with $209 million in local and private sector matching funds, support the $288 million project that will provide access to high-speed internet to more than 36,000 residents and business in the counties. The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission was awarded an $80,000 grant by the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) along with $20,000 local matching funds to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the region. A CEDS provides a vehicle for individuals, organizations, local governments, institutions of learning, and private industry to engage in a meaningful conversation and debate about what capacity building efforts would best serve economic development in the region. Sandy joined the TJPDC in 2019 as the Director of Planning and Transportation. Sandy has worked on a wide range of transportation and planning projects during her tenure with the PDC, including the Rivanna River Corridor Study, an analysis of locations for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge across the Rivanna River, and the Zion Crossroads Gateway Plan. She also directs the Charlottesville-Albemarle Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Rural Transportation Program. The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission seeks public comment on its Housing Preservation Grant application to USDA’s Rural Housing Service. If awarded, the grant will provide funding for emergency repairs, rehabilitation, and home safety modifications for very low-income rural homeowners in Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson counties. The comment period is from June 17 through July 5, 2022. A draft statement of activities is available here for review and on the TJPDC's HOME Consortium web page.
