    The 2024 General Assembly adjourned its 60-day session on March 9 by completing action on amendments to the current FY24 state budget; a biennial state spending plan for FY25 and FY26; and more than 90 bills that were in dispute in the session’s final days.The FY25/FY26 budget was approved by the House of Delegates on a 62-37 vote and by the Senate, 24-14.     March Commission Meeting Updates

    The TJPD Commission met on March 7 and received presentations on the following topics:the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative project administered by TJPDC;the Rural Transportation Work Program;the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy; andthe Regional Transit Governance Study (final approval by the Commission)The Commission also appointed three members to the TJPDC Corporation and adopted several amendments to the current (FY24) budget.     Logan Ende, Regional PlannerLogan joined the PDC in January. He earned a B.S. in Environment Science at UVA, and then a Master's in Urban and Environmental Planning, also from UVA.     The TJPD Commission met on February 8th and received presentations on the following topics: 1) Executive Director, Christine Jacobs, provided an orientation to the TJPDC, which welcomed four new Commissioners: Albemarle County Supervisor Mike Pruitt, Greene County Supervisor Tim Goolsby, Citizen Representative from Greene County James Higgins, and  Louisa Supervisor Manning Woodward; 2) the FY25 CAP Operating Grant for the RideShare program; 3) the FY25 Grant for the Mobility Management program; and 4) a resolution for the application for a USDOT RAISE Grant- Rivanna River Bike Ped Bridge.     Weldon Cooper Center Releases New Virginia Population Estimates

    Each year, the Weldon Cooper Center develops and releases official population estimates for Virginia counties and independent cities to show population counts between decennial censuses. These estimates provide the best approximation of the population count on July 1 of the prior year.  State and local governments use this data for funding allocations, planning and budgeting purposes.The July 1, 2023 population estimate for the TJPDC region was 272,011, which is about 8,394 residents, or 3.2% higher, than the 2020 Census.     CEDS Grant Update

    TJPDC received a U.S. EDA Economic Adjustment Assistance grant to fund development of a regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) plan to benefit all TJPDC localities. A CEDS is meant to integrate with and complement other economic development plans. Rather than being “owned” by any one agency, a CEDS consists of plans of action that may be undertaken by multiple players.
