    The Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) has been selected to receive an $857,600 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) award from the United States Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan for all jurisdictions in Region 10, which includes the Counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson, and the City of Charlottesville.The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) established the new SS4A discretionary grant program to provide $5 billion over five years for regional, local, and Tribal initiatives to make the nation’s roadways safer…

    2023 Hazard Mitigation Plan Approved

    On January 17, the TJPDC’s 2023 Update of the Regional Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan was approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The items reviewed address the planning process, hazard identification and risk assessment, mitigation strategies and plan maintenance.The plan received a “satisfactory” rating on all required criteria. After this approval, TJPDC began to work to schedule formal adoption dates all governing boards in the region; Albemarle, Charlottesville, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson, Town of Louisa, Town of Mineral, Town of Scottsville, and Town of Stanardsville.     Weldon Cooper Center Releases New Virginia Population Estimates

    Each year, the Weldon Cooper Center develops and releases official population estimates for Virginia counties and independent cities to show population counts between decennial censuses. These estimates provide the best approximation of the population count on July 1 of the prior year.  State and local governments use this data for funding allocations, planning and budgeting purposes.The July 1, 2022 population estimate for the TJPDC region was 270,319, which is about 6,700 residents, or 2.5% higher, than the 2020 Census estimate.     Lori Allshouse, VATI Program DirectorLori Allshouse joined the TJPD in February 2022 as the VATI Program Director. In this role, she is directing TJPDC’s super regional broadband project, conducted in collaboration with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Telecommunication Initiative, Firefly Fiber Broadband, partner counties, and supporting electric utility providers.     Watershed Filmmaking and Mapping

    This past fall, the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center received grants from Crutchfield and from the Bama Works Fund of Dave Matthews Band to launch our Watershed Filmmaking and Mapping Workshops in 2023. With these workshops, we teach students how to document our rivers and streams, giving hands-on experience at our site at Trevillian’s Creek and on the Rivanna River.
